Death of President Saparmurat Niyazov - Dec. 21, 2006

On December 21, 2006 Turkmenistan state media announced the death of President Saparmurat Niyazov. While the U.S. Embassy is not aware of any threats to public order at this time, we strongly urge all American citizens to exercise caution and to avoid any and all public manifestations. Given the uncertainty of the general situation in Turkmenistan, the U.S. Embassy advises American citizens to consider deferring non-essential travel to Turkmenistan until further notice.
