Ashgabat, July 13, 2009 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Project HOPE presented informational materials on tuberculosis to the Press Center of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan for distribution throughout Turkmenistan.  This USAID/Project HOPE contribution is worth $13,123.

These materials will support the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) by raising awareness about tuberculosis among different target groups.  Employees of the Ministry’s Press Center participated in USAID and Project HOPE training on dissemination and use of these materials prior to receiving these materials.  The materials include: 40 000 booklets about TB symptoms and transmission for general population,  4000 brochures about TB symptoms and treatment for patients,  2000 posters with TB diagnostic algorithm for medical workers, and 1000 counseling flipcharts for medical workers.

Tuberculosis is a widespread infection that claims thousands of lives each year throughout Central Asia, as well as around the world.  USAID and Project HOPE are working with the Government of Turkmenistan to enhance awareness of this dangerous but curable disease, and to improve its diagnostics capabilities and treatment success.

Creating these informational materials is one of many activities made possible by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which has provided more than $80 million in assistance programs that support economic growth, community initiatives, and expanded access to information, healthcare, and education systems in Turkmenistan since 1993.
