The U.S. Embassy Commemorates Columbus Day

Ashgabat, October 04, 2007 – On October 8, U.S. Charge d’Affaires a.i., Ambassador Richard Hoagland will open a “Discover America” film festival on the occasion of Columbus Day and introduce the first film in the series, Citizen Kane,” a classic American film.  Every film screening will be held at the State Children’s Library (old National Library) in central Ashgabat, starting at 19:00. 

The festival will show movies for two weeks on every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday in the State Children’s Library.  Showtimes will start at 19:00 and will be free and open to public.  All films will be shown with Russian language subtitles or dubbing.

The full schedule of movies follows:

  • Monday, October 8, 2007 at 19:00. Charge d’Affaires Richard Hoagland will open the program.  Screening of the first film Citizen Kane. (Drama)
  • Wednesday, October 10, 2007, 19:00 - Screening of the second film Million Dollar Baby. (Drama) Introductory remarks by PAO Andrew Paul.
  • Saturday, October 13, 2007, 19:00 - Screening of the third film The Fisher King. (Comedy/Drama) Introductory remarks by CAO Peter Paul Galus.
  • Monday, October 15, 2007, 19:00 - Screening of the fourth film Patton. (Historical/War)  Introductory remarks by PAO Andrew Paul.
  • Wednesday, October 17, 2007, 19:00 - Screening of the fifth film Tootsie. (Comedy)  Introductory remarks by CAO Peter Paul Galus.
  • Saturday, October 20, 2007, 19:00 - Screening of the sixth film Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid. (Western) Introductory remarks by PAO Andrew Paul.

Columbus Day is a U.S. National holiday, commemorating the date of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492.  Since 1971, the holiday has been commemorated in the U.S. on the second Monday in October.
