U.S. Ambassador's TV Statement on Turkmenistan's Neutrality Day
Dec. 4, 2003
On December 3, 2003, Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson addressed the people of Turkmenistan on the occasion of Turkmenistan's Neutrality Day. Her remarks, broadcast by Turkmen TV Altyn Asyr Channel, highlighted the importance of democracy, prosperity, and security cooperation. The following is the full text of the Ambassador's statement:
Congratulations to the people of Turkmenistan on Neutrality Day.
Turkmenistan's policy of neutrality has been accompanied by a record of peaceful relations with its neighbors, and Turkmenistan deserves recognition for joining the international coalition against terrorism. We hope that Turkmenistan will build on this record by increasing its cooperation in the international arena.
Along with pursuing cooperation in economic development and security, the United States seeks to work with your government and your people in developing democracy and human rights. It is fitting that Turkmenistan's Neutrality Day comes right after International Human Rights Day. To achieve true stability and prosperity, every member of society must have the right to freely pursue his own goals, and the responsibility to contribute towards a brigher future for his community.
I appreciate this opportunity to speak to the people of Turkmenistan on Neutrality Day and would like to convey the best wishes of all Americans to the people of Turkmenistan.
Thank you.
