U.S. Deplores Attempt on the Life of President Niyazov

Statement by the Office of Public Affairs, Department of State 

We have seen reports of the apparent attempt on Monday, November 25 on the life of Turkmenistan President Saparmurat Niyazov. We strongly deplore this kind of violence and are relieved that President Niyazov was unhurt.

We have no comment on speculation about the perpetrators. We expect the Government of Turkmenistan authorities to conduct a full, fair, and transparent investigation into Monday's incident.
