U.S. Issues Travel Warning to American Citizens in Turkmenistan
Sept. 20, 2001
The U.S. Department of State issued a travel warning today advising American citizens to defer travel to Turkmenistan and authorizing voluntary departure of non-essential American personnel from the embassy. The warning notes that the Government of Turkmenistan has taken steps to increase security around the country. It warns, however, that the recent terrorist attacks in the United States and the proximity of Turkmenistan to Afghanistan have raised additional security concerns for Americans there.
The Department of State has received no threat information specific to Turkmenistan and issued this travel warning based on general security concerns. The full text of the warning may be found on the Department of State's website, at www.travel.state.gov, or at the embassy.
