2001 Press Releases
Remarks by Charge d'Affaires Eric T. Schultz to "Watan" News After the September 11th Tragedy in the U.S.
Sept. 13, 2001
My thanks, my government's thanks, and the American people's thanks to the President and the people of Turkmenistan for heir support. Today my country is still deep in mourning. This was an enormous tragedy not only for the American people but for the world. It truly was a World Trade Center with companies from 26 countries working there, and with the buildings only blocks from the UN Headquarters. Thousands and thousands of innocent people have died, not only Americans, but people from all over the world who were simply going about their daily lives. And all over the world people are reacting with shock and anger to this cowardly and insane attack and wondering where will it end.
To reiterate President Bush’s words: these attacks may shatter steel but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. We stand for peace and security in the world. We will not back down. President Bush said we will find those responsible and bring them to justice, and he said we will make no distinction between those who committed these acts and those who harbor them. There can be no refuge anywhere for these people.
I urge Turkmenistan to join the United States and the civilized world in the war against terrorism and those who promote it. With support of the world community, with your support, we will win this fight. Again, thank you for your kind words, your kind thoughts, and above all your prayers.
