Aug. 3, 2001
A 20-foot container of humanitarian assistance will arrive in Ashgabat August 5, 2001. Cold weather clothing and insect net protectors, valued at over $50,000 were donated by the U.S. Government as part of its on-going initiative to support vulnerable populations in Turkmenistan.
The project is being administered for the USAID by Counterpart International Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP), in collaboration with CHAP's distribution partner, Balkan Velayat Department of the Ministry of Social Welfare of Turkmenistan.
The Balkan Velayat Department of Social Welfare will distribute this assistance to the Balkan Territorial Center, which serves lonely and disabled elderly, and to orphans and large families in the remote etraps of Balkan Velayat.
CHAP has been working with the Ministry of Social Welfare of Turkmenistan for more than two years. Since 1999, the Ministry has received and distributed over 2 million dollars of CHAP humanitarian assistance provided by the US Government and other donors throughout Turkmenistan. With shipments of clothing expected in September 2001, CHAP and the Ministry of Social Welfare of Turkmenistan will continue the effort to benefit the most needy population groups in Turkmenistan.
