American Organization Delivers More Aid Under U.S.-Turkmen Cooperation Program
July 3, 2001
On June 25, two 40-foot containers of clothing, footwear and household items valued at $220,200 arrived in Turkmenbashi. This humanitarian assistance was delivered from the U.S. by Counterpart International Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP) as part of a U.S.-Turkmen Cooperation Program in the humanitarian field.
The shipment is being distributed to the elderly, orphans, disabled, and large families by CHAP's partners in Turkmenistan: the Center of Industrial Unions and Organizations of the Disabled of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat, and "Umyt" Social Adaptation Center in Turkmenbashi.
According to the Chairman of "Umyt" Social Adaptation Center, Khodgamurad Byashimov, it is the first humanitarian shipment directly received from CHAP by "Umyt". He continued, "We hope that this is the beginning of our long-term cooperation. The objective of our organization is to provide social adaptation and rehabilitation to people in need, to help them become equal members of the community. The success of this project depends on improvement of their living conditions. Thanks to the aid rendered by CHAP, we hope to relieve the needs of the disabled, elderly and low-income people."
CHAP has been working with the Center of Industrial Unions and Organizations of the Disabled of Turkmenistan for more than two years. Since 1999, these two groups have distributed over two million dollars worth of assistance.
